6 Signs You Need a Root Canal

A root canal is a dental procedure necessary to address an infected tooth. By that point, the infection has likely spread inside the tooth, reaching the nerve area. Tooth infections can be quite uncomfortable, and it’s important to see the dentist right away. The more you wait, the more you risk losing your tooth!

Here are 6 telling signs you may need a root canal:

1. Pain That Doesn’t Go Away

Everyone knows what a toothache is like, so in the beginning, you might not think much about it. However, if the pain persists no matter what you do (cold compress, over-the-counter medicine, etc.), then you may need a root canal.

While tooth pain can be caused by many other dental health issues, it’s usually a sign to see a dentist, especially if the pain gets so bad you cannot go about your day or even sleep.

2. Tooth Discoloration

If you notice your tooth is gray or even blacker, it’s likely caused by an infection, which is breaking down the internal tissue of your tooth. If the discoloration is limited to just one tooth, then it’s likely time for a root canal.

3. Heat and Cold Sensitivity

If you feel a sharp pain or ache when consuming cold or hot food or beverages, it could be a sign that an infection is affecting your tooth. In the beginning stages, the pain can be limited to exposure to these extreme temperatures, but over time you will begin to feel it all the time.

4. Swollen Gums or Abscess Formation

Unfortunately, the infection doesn’t always limit itself inside the tooth. It can also cause the gum tissue surrounding it to become swollen and even painful to touch.

Some people will also get an abscess forming just below or above the tooth. If it bursts, and pus leaks out, you may experience an unpleasant taste in your mouth and even bad breath.

5. A Loose Tooth

In some cases, infections can cause the tooth to loosen as the infected tissue reaches the root area and weakens the bone around the tooth.

If you notice one tooth is loose, then you likely need a root canal. However, if multiple teeth feel loose, there could be another explanation, such as gum disease, in any case, you should see the dentist right away.

6. Tooth Cracks or Chips

It’s not the infection that causes the tooth to chip or crack, but rather the other way around. If you injure your tooth and don’t get it fixed, bacteria can make their way inside and eventually lead to an injection.
